Mungiki letter to CJ Willy Mutunga, questions arise

At a press conference outside the Supreme Court yesterday afternoon, Kenya’s Chief Justice Willy Mutunga produced a letter purporting to be from the Mungiki, addressed to ‘Judges/Ambassadors’, threatening them with death and warning them to buy their own graves if Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto were barred from standing in the elections. The assembled media were not allowed to ask the Chief Justice any questions but many questions remain to be answered.

The letter that claimed to be from the ‘Mungiki Veterans Group/Kenya Sovereignty Defence Squad’ was dated 13 February and Mutunga said he received it on 18 February (last Monday) three days after the courts had cleared Kenyatta and Ruto to stand in the elections.

MUTUNGA: “STATEMENT DOES NOT SEEK TO CAUSE ALARM”

Mutunga told the press: “I have considered the possible implications of this public statement, but concluded that given the history of this country, such a public disclosure is warranted, necessary, and proper. This statement does not seek to cause alarm but to strengthen the resolve of each and every Kenyan to protect our Constitution, secure our transition, and affirm our future.”

INVESTIGATIONS UNDERWAY

Investigations are underway to try to find the source of the letter and apprehend the culprit or culprits behind it. This is the right course of action, says the Kenya Forum, and hopefully those investigations will be thorough and successful. Whoever wrote the letter should be arrested.
