Embattled Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly, Beatrice Elachi has tendered her resignation earlier today.
Elachi cited frustrations, recent aggression in the county assembly and threats on her life as key reasons for stepping down.
“For the last few days, we have seen a lot of conflict and even life-threatening incidences. I humbly tender my resignation,”
She further appointed the deputy speaker, John Kamangu as the acting speaker and chairperson of the Nairobi accountant service board as the assembly prepares to elect a new speaker.
“Today I leave with my head high, that is the most important thing,” she said.
Elachi further asked Governor Mike Sonko to focus on God and stop threatening people’s lives.
Elachi’s resignation comes in the background of numerous chaos and wrangles in the county assembly that have left MCAs divided but a majority opposed to her leadership.
Ms Elachi had just returned to office in October last year after more than a year out following her impeachment in September 2018.
