Joho summoned to make statement over ‘forged’ KCSE certificate

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned Mombasa governor Hassan Joho to record a statement over his allegedly forged KCSE certificate.

Pius Macharia, DCI regional coordinator Coast region, in a letter dated March 27 asked the governor to appear before a Samuel Nyambengi, an assistant inspector general of police, who is investigating the offence.

Pursuant to section 52(1) of the National Police Service Act, 1 do hereby require you,Ali Hassan Joho to personally appear before Mr Samuel O.Nyambegi, an assistant Inspector General of Police investigating the alleged offense on 28th of March at 10.00am at the regional DCI headquarter Mombasa for statement recording relating to the forgery of a 1992 examination result slip in your name which is the subject of this investigation,” the letter by Macharia read in part.

Joho is accused of forging his KCSE certificate to obtain admission at the university contrary to section 345 and 349 of the penal code. This is after the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) announced that the governor’s high school academic certificate is fake.

Joho has acknowledged receipt of the letter and has responded to the DCI saying that he has had prior commitments on the said date and will therefore not appear for the summons as required. He, however, said that he would avail himself on Wednesday.

As I explained to you by the time you delivered this letter, I had already scheduled activities for the following day, 28th March 2017, in view of this, I will not be in a position to appear in your offices for the said statement recording. I shall appear on Wednesday 28th March,” Joho said.

Serani Principal Comes to Joho’s Defence

The principal of Serani secondary school, where Joho schooled, yesterday in a letter confirmed that the governor indeed attended the school and sat for his national exams in 1993.

“Joho was a bonafide student in our institution between February 1990 to November 1993. He enrolled in our institution in 22/02/1990 under admission number 326,” Abbas Juma Ulaya said.

“He sat for his KCSE examination in November 1993 under index number 16032063.”

“As an academic institution, we take matters of students’ status with utmost seriousness,” the principal said.
