Police shoot 3 dead at CORD protest against IEBC

There was a public uproar yesterday following reports that the police had shot dead three people in CORD’S nationwide protests, held every Monday in their campaign to push out the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).

One person was killed in Kisumu and two others in Siaya during the anti-IEBC protests while several others sustained gunshot wounds. Roads were barricaded as demonstrators engaged police in running battles.

Kenyans took to social media to condemn the killings, although opinions as to who was to blame for the lost lives remained divided with one quarter blaming the government for being brutal and trying to curtail the freedom of the demonstrators while the other blamed the opposition for risking the lives of its supporters for political mileage.

CORD AND JUBILEE MPS AT WAR

THE anti-IEBC protests by the opposition have elicited a war of words between Jubilee and CORD MPs, with the former suing CORD over damage during the protests.

Five Jubilee MPs namely, Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Dennis Waweru (Dagoretti), Kimani Ichung’wah (Kikuyu), Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete) and Alice Nga’ng’a (Thika Town) have sued the CORD leaders for contempt of court after they failed to ensure their protests to force IEBC Commissioners out office remained peaceful and are demanding for property of the coalition’s Leader Raila Odinga’s to be valued and sold to meet cost of damage from their demonstrations.

CORD leaders on the other hand have blamed three Jubilee MPs of arming youths to disrupt their “peaceful protests” and said that they had forwarded the information to the police.

There are two MPs from Nairobi and one from Kiambu who we have information are planning to interfere with our protests tomorrow using all manner of gadgets, and even weapons, and we have informed the police where they have been hidden,” Mr Orengo said.

BONI KHALWALE, JUNET MOHAMMED ARRESTED

Senator Boni Khalwale, who was leading anti-IEBC demos in Kakamega was arrested yesterday and later released on a personal bond of Sh100,000 while in Nairobi  Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed was arrested over the ongoing protests and held at Kilimani police station.
