Wilson Sossion has resigned as the Secretary-General of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), where he has served for the last eight years.
Sossion announced the announcement on Friday, saying he will now shift his full attention to legislative duties.
“I have outgrown KNUT. My responsibility now shifts to Parliament,” he said in a press conference.
Sossion is a Nominated Member of Parliament, who joined the National Assembly in 2017 through the ODM Party.
The surprising announcement comes a day before the union’s national elections.
Sossion will be remembered for his firmness in fighting for the welfare of teachers.
The Law Society of Kenya president Nelson Havi said Sossion’s resignation was politically motivated and an effort by the executive to control the teacher’s union.
“The resignation of Secretary-General Wilson Sossion from KNUT completes Executive capture of the Teachers Union. We will not allow it to recapture LSK. “ Havi said in Tweet.
