QUEEN OF KATWE UGANDA PREMIERE

The Disney World-produced film, Queen of Katwe, which features Kenya’s Oscar award winner Lupita Nyong’o premiered over the weekend in Kampala, Uganda.

Lupita plays the role of “Harriet” a widowed mother to 11 year old Phiona (Madina Nalwanga), whom the film revolves around.

Phiona Mutesi is a talented chess player, living in the slums of Katwe, who rises beyond all odds to win the Uganda National Chess Challenge.

Queen of Katwe, based on a true story is an adaptation of a book of the same title authored by American writer Tim Crothers. The film is directed by Mira Nair, founder of Maisha Film Lab.

“Queen of Katwe is a tale of resilience, learning and strong women who overcome the odds.Today my heart is exploding with happiness at bringing the film home.” Nair said.

According to Lupita, playing Harriet made her appreciate mothers more.

“Phiona Mutesi is the true #QueenOfKatwe, and it has been an honor to help share her incredibly courageous story to people around the world. Her wisdom and strength transcend her young age, and I have adored getting to know her,” Lupita posted on her Facebook page.

The film first premiered globally at the Toronto International Film Festival last month. Nigeria’s David Oyelowo also stars in the film as Phiona’s trainer.
