IVORY COAST COLOMBIAYAYA THE BACKBONE OF THE ELEPHANTS

Ivory Coast opened their campaign in Brazil with a 2-1 win over Japan. The West Africans had to come from behind having conceded an early superb goal by Honda at the 16th minute and failed to register any goal during the first 45minutes yet dominating possession. The equalizer came in the second half in the 64th minute courtesy of Swansea City target man W. Bonny and two minutes later Gervinho won the game for the Elephants. Yaya Toure was the Man of the Match having dominated the midfield and made most passes in the game.

IVORY COAST HOPING TO LEAD THE TABLE

This time round the Elephants are looking to finish top in their group and might be the best hope for Africans in this tournament. They face Colombia on 19th June and a win will assure them of the 2nd round.

FORMER EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS, THRASHED

Colombia had a relatively easy game trashing former European champions three goal to nil. They started scoring at the 5th minute and the Greek tried to come back into the game but the opposing keeper was up to the task. Second half began also in the same fashion as the first half. Teo registered his first goal for the tournament in the 58th minute. James finished the Greece off with the third goal in the additional time.

A WORLD CUP FULL OF SURPRISES

Very few people would have predicted that the underdogs in group D would end up beating two time World champions in the biggest stage of world football. Uruguay started the game well and pressured the opponent. In the 24th minute Cavani got a goal from the spot kick and his team continued their impressive start until the second half. Young star, Campbell, an Arsenal forward on loan, got a goal in the 54th minute when the Uruguay defenders were caught off guard. Things went from bad to worse for Uruguay when three minutes later after the equalizer Duate found the back of the net. Costa Rica were now leading and piling pressure on the former champions. The game was sealed by a beautiful goal in the 84th minute by Urena assisted by Campbell. Uruguay fullback, Pereira, received a red card for a reckless tackle on Campbell in injury time. All this show went down as Suarez, Liverpool star man and Barclays Premier League top scorer watched from the bench.

SUPER MARIO DOES IT AGAIN:

The anticipated game in group D did not disappoint the fans. Chances were made in the entertaining game but experience prevailed. The first goal came from a corner at the 35th minute courtesy of Marchisio. However two minute later Rooney passed a lovely cross to Sturridge who sent it in the back of the net to make it an equaliser. The Italians routinely dominated the possession while England looked to catch them on the counter attack.

In the second half Balotelli scored the second goal that would become the winning goal. The controversial Center Forward had his shot on target headed out off the line after beating Joe Hart. The Manchester City keeper was almost beaten in the dying moments of the game when Pirlo’s 35 yard free kick rattled the woodwork.

ENGLAND OR URUGUAY MAY GO HOME EARLY:

On 19th June the looser between Uruguay and England might face an early elimination. Luiz Suarez could be in action to save his national team although he is still recovering from injury.
