Manchester United agreed a British record £59.7 million deal with Real Madrid for winger Angel Di Maria, in a deal that was reached on Tuesday evening, putting to rest speculations that have been making rounds in the international media.
Di Maria arrived in Manchester after saying his goodbyes to his Real Madrid teammates and signed a five year contract worth £6.5 million a year placing him just behind United captain Wayne Rooney in terms of earnings.
‘I am absolutely delighted to be joining United’, Di Maria said as he was officially unveiled by the Club. ‘I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Spain and there were a lot of clubs interested in me, but United is the only club that I would have left Real Madrid for’.
‘Louis van Gaal is a fantastic coach with a proven track record of success and I am impressed by the vision and determination everyone has to get this club back to the top – where it belongs. I now just cannot wait to get started.’
Louis Van Gaal said: ‘Angel is a world-class midfielder but most importantly he is a team player. There is no doubting his immense natural talent.
‘He is a tremendously fast and incisive left-footed player who puts fear into the most accomplished defence.
‘His dribbling skills and his ability to take on and beat opponents are a joy to watch. He is an excellent addition to the team.’
Real Madrid had asked for nearly £75m for the forward from Manchester United but looked to have settled for a compromise considering the fact that no other club was really going to match the asking price apart from United, leaving United with no real competition for his signature. If the amount is anything to go by, the transfer will top the £50m Chelsea paid Liverpool for Fernando Torres in 2011. Di Maria joined Real Madrid from Benfica for £36m in 2010.
