Malcolm Glazer, the billionaire owner of the most famous football club in the World, Manchester United, has died at the age of 85. The self-made billionaire and owner of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers, died on Wednesday.
WILL MANCHESTER UNITED FANS MISS HIM?
Glazer took over Manchester United controversially against the wishes of the majority of United supporters and propelled the club into huge debts which they are still servicing up to now. There have been protests by the fans over the years to try and kick the Glazer family out of the club. With all the debt, and protests from fans, United still managed to win five Premier League titles and a Champions League under Glazer. Though respect is expected, one doubts whether there will be any sympathy for the deceased and the family.
Though Glazer Snr has been ill for some time and has left the running of United to sons Joel and Avram, it will be interesting to see how things unfold at the club now that Glazer Snr has passed on. Will they finally sell the club as most of the fans wish?
After Alex Ferguson, the long serving manager retired, Manchester United appointed a new manager in Louis Van Gaal after sacking David Moyes who had an unsuccessful spell finishing 7th in the Premier League, which was an unfamiliar territory for such a massive club. Van Gaal is tasked in bringing United back to the top of the English Premier League and competing for titles again.
Manchester United, alongside Arsenal, is the most popular EPL club in Kenya and anxiety is rife as to the fate of the club. With all the changes happening at the club it undoubtedly marks a new era for United who have been used to longevity under one manager. We wait to see if the era will be positive, or will it be another Liverpool, or worse, Leeds United?
