IEBC KICKS OFF MASS VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

kenya_elections003_16x9The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has today launched a mass voter registration campaign ahead of the 2017 general elections.

According to the commission 5,756 BVR kits will be deployed across the country in the 30-day mass voter registration drive that will run from February 15 to March 15. IEBC Communication and Corporate Affairs Manager Tabitha Mutemi said that a corresponding number of Voter Registration Assistants has been deployed nationwide to conduct the exercise at County Assembly Wards.

IEBC’s chairman, Ahmed Issack Hassan, said through a statement that the exercise will be targeting an additional 4 million voters and maintained that all preparations are in place.

IEBC has also announced that it will hold a major road show aimed at registering across Nairobi. The convoy is expected to make stopovers at various estates including Kariokor, Mathare, Roysambu, Zimmerman, Kasarani, Umoja, Kayole and Pipeline.

The ongoing voter registration exercise will involve registration of new eligible voters; transfer of voters who are already registered but wish to change their polling stations; and verification of the register for already registered voters.

IEBC had registered a base of 14.3 million voters for the 2013 elections.

Kenya’s 2017 general elections have been scheduled for August in line with the Constitution , which provides that a General Election shall be held on the second Tuesday of August every fifth year.
