Amina Mohammed loses African Union chair election

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Amina Mohammed lost the battle to become chairperson of the African Union Commission after she lost to Chad’s Moussa Mahamat.

Kenya garnered 27 votes and Chad 26, while one country abstained in the fifth round in the sixth round, Chad got 28 votes and Kenya 25, while one head of state abstained.

Mahamat takes over from South Africa’s Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, whose term began in 2012 and ended in June.

The government had vehemently lobbied for Amina to clinch the top AU seat and in a spirited campaign that reached 51 out of 53 African Union member states that is said to have cost millions.

Campaign for Amina’s AU job seems to have frustrated Kenyans at home

The visible fixation by the jubilee government to ensure that Amina clinched the AU chairperson position and the prominence in which it gave her “campaign” at the expense of issues currently affecting wananchi like the doctors strike, which has paralyzed healthcare seems to have infuriated Kenyans who took to social media to ironically celebrate Amina’s defeat.

Amina, who is Kenya’s first female foreign affairs minister, had been a darling of wananchi, who touted her as among the best performing cabinet secretaries in the jubilee government but her ministry’s failure to intervene in the case surrounding four Kenyans who are in detention in Juba and the other fateful incident that saw another Kenyan die while being illegally detained in Ethiopia have blown off her candle.

According to views shared online, a recent interview the CS had on Al Jazeera where she arrogantly denied that there were cases of extra-judicial killings in the country also painted her in bad light after the footage went viral.

Below are some of the views shared by Kenyans on twitter under the hashtags #WhyAminaLost #AminaDDay
