Nasa Divided Over Raila’s Planned Swearing In?

“Raila Odinga’s swearing-in is a recipe for chaos and will not produce solutions,” Wiper Deputy Party Leader Farah Maalim has said.

These words by Farah Maalim, who was speaking during an interview on NTV on Monday, indeed indicate that there are some dissenting voices in Nasa with regards to the plan to install Raila Odinga as the people’s president on December 12.

Although Maalim did not say that is the official position of the wiper party, whose leader is Odinga’s running mate in the August elections Kalonzo Musyoka, it can be assumed to be the case.

“I am somebody with a legal background and who would like to uphold the law. I have not been part of the process of the agreement for the swearing-in,” said Maalim.

He also maintained that although he supports electoral reforms, he will “hesitate to back the idea of swearing-in another president”.

“What we need to do is back and try to use other methods to push changes we want implemented. Swearing-in Raila, to me, will not be a solution,” he said.

Kalonzo’s position on the plan to swear in Odinga as the people’s president remains unknown considering he has not been in the public limelight for some time since he traveled to Germany to care for his hospitalized wife.

National Resistance Movement (NRM) had also planned to swear in Odinga as president on 28thNovember in a parallel rally at jacaranda grounds, the same day President Uhuru Kenyatta was inaugurated but Raila rejected the plans.

Odinga is said to have declared this stand at a meeting with NASA leaders on Saturday at Maanzoni lodge, Machakos County to the  chagrin of the leaders who were advocating for him to be sworn in based on the August Elections, which they say he won.

Some NRM leaders like Miguna Miguna even took to social media to air their displeasure with Odinga’s decision.

“This is ‘s BIG MISTAKE. In 2011, Allasane Quattara BRAVELY staked out the presidency of Côte d’Ivoire. Gambian president, Adama Barrow did the same in January 2017. No one begs for power!” Miguna Miguna tweeted.

PLANS TO SWEAR IN IN ODINGA STILL ON

Nasa has vowed to carry on with the plan to swear in Raila Odinga as the People’s President on December 12 with the leaders saying that they will on Tuesday roll out a programme of events leading up to Odinga’s swearing-in.
