Lady Justice Martha Karambu Koome was sworn into office on 21 May 2021, becoming the fifteenth and Kenya’s first female Chief Justice, following her Parliamentary approval on May 19th, which upheld her nomination by the Judicial Service Commission. Justice Martha Koome takes Oath of Office as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Kenya.

Female Leadership in Kenya: Positive Progress

Women in Kenya are gradually making their leadership presence felt in business, politics, education, STEM, etc. at regional, national, and global levels.

Female trailblazers both at a local and international level have proven to fellow women that it can be done and Women in Kenya are now resolved to break the traditional glass ceiling that barred them from entering leadership positions even when they possessed the requisite skills and talent to occupy them.

As a nation, Kenya has made strides in advancing Gender Equity and removing some of the barriers that made it difficult for women to rise to positions of power, which include patriarchal stereotypes that women can only serve in certain gendered roles.

Women In Politics

The 2017 elections saw more women elected than at any other elections in the history of Kenya. For the first time since Kenya ushered in devolution following the promulgation of the 2010 constitution, three female governors were elected and five senators and we hope to see more women elected in the upcoming 2022 General election.

Although Leadership is not gender-specific, there are certain differences in the basic traits and qualities possessed by men and female leaders and they tend to show distinctly different styles of leadership.

Female leadership has proven to be quite transformational and vital to increasing the pace of societal transformation and we need much more of it in Kenya.
