Kenya could be banned from the 2016 Olympic games because of doping

Kenya could be banned from the Olympics if the country is declared non-compliant by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

According to the Daily Telegraph, Sebastian Coe, the president of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), he will look to ban Kenya’s entire track and field team from the Olympics if the country’s athletics federation joined Russia’s in being declared non-compliant with the World Anti-Doping Agency code.

“Yes, if it means pulling them out of World Championships or Olympic Games then we will have to do that. I know the World Anti-Doping Agency has looked very closely at the Kenyan National Anti-Doping Agency. We, of course, monitor that through the IAAF so that work is ongoing. Coe said.

40 KENYAN ATHLETES BANNED FOR DOPING

Kenya, which has had more than 40 athletes banned for doping in the past three years, is being accused of failing to prove to WADA that it is dealing with the doping menace.

The country, which has produced several champions especially in the long distance races, has been under investigation by WADA amid growing reports of drugs among its athletes with the anti-doping body saying that it’s looking into reports that Kenya is not doing enough to combat doping.

“We have not yet received the details nor the assurances we need from Kenya; this is now a matter for our independent compliance process.” the World Anti-Doping Agency said

Wada wants Kenya to institute measures to combat doping and is recommending among other things, the funding of a national anti-doping agency.

“We are awaiting concrete plans from the Kenyan government for the funding of the national anti-doping agency, and, crucially, the finalization of Kenya’s legislation and anti-doping rules”.

KENYA WORKING ON ANTI-DOPING MEASURES

Kenyan officials have however said they are working to meet the requirements by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

“I am sure all the different organs of government are making efforts to ensure that we go through this,” said Jackson Tuwei, the interim president of Athletics Kenya. “What we can do right now is to work hard within the time given and ensure we get out of that watch list.”

Last year November, Russia was banned from world athletics following allegations of widespread and state-sponsored doping in a report by WADA.

If declared non-complainant Kenya, the athletics power house that dominated the medal rankings in the 15th IAAF World Championships in Beijing, will be locked out of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro ,Brazil in august.

ZIKA VIRUS MAY KEEP KENYAN ATHLETES AWAY FROM RIO OLYMPICS

Kenyan officials had however previously said that it might not send athletes to the  Rio Olympics, if the Zika virus outbreak in brazil is not controlled.
