Government Extends Deadline for E-passport Migration to 2021

The government has further extended the deadline for the migration of the e-passport to 2021.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, in a statement released on Monday, said the new extension is due to the fact that approximately 1.8 million Kenyans, especially those living in the diaspora, are yet to migrate to the new generation e-passports.

The initial deadline for phasing out the old passport had been set for August 31, 2019, it was extended to March 1, 2020.

Kenya has been keen on introducing the e-passport and had issued a deadline for August 31st, 2019, which had seen hundreds of people flock at Nyayo House in Nairobi as early as 4 am from early last year in order to beat the deadline, prompting the government to open up more passport processing centers in other counties.

APPOINTMENT

Applicants are required to apply for their passports online and book an appointment at the e-citizen portal and get approval before setting off to any passport processing centers in the country for either new passport application or renewal.
