Nairobi residents should brace themselves to contend with dry taps for much longer as water levels at the Ndakaini dam hit a new low of below 25%.

According to Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) Managing Director Philip Gichuki, the situation has been occasioned by the drying up of rivers that feed the dam.

In January, the company issued a water rationing schedule to last until April when the long rains kick off, which was expected to increase Ndakaini’s water levels. At the beginning of the year the water levels stood at 42 per cent.

Mr Gichuki says that the current water rationing schedule should be reviewed until the onset of the rains.

“The dam is completely depleted. We are currently at below 25 per cent which is the first time we are getting to that level. “We will review the situation in the next two weeks. What we will do now is to further reduce production. It will be more intense now but hopefully we will not get to that level,” he said.

The water company on Sunday announced a disruption of water supply services to residents of three counties including Nairobi, Kiambu and parts of Machakos County between 6th and 8th April to allow for the maintenance of the raw water pipeline from Mataara-Ngethu.
