The luxurious DUSIT D2 has resumed business following the deadly terror attack that claimed 21 lives in January this year.
“We are back to business,” said Michael Metaxas, the hotel’s Managing Director during the official opening ceremony on Thursday.
The opening ceremony was marked by pomp and creativity and involved celebrated world champion David Rudisha, who was Dusit’s flag at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) to deliver it to the riverside location.
Rudisha, alongside a team of about 50 runners sprinted from University Way to 14 Riverside Drive and delivered the flags to Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala and dusitD2’s MD Metaxas.
Dusit D2 flag was then hoisted alongside the national flag by uniformed police officers to symbolize the official opening.
Security has been beefed up at the hotel; two gates have been installed to regulate prompt access before it was just one main gate at the entrance. CCTV security surveillance has also been reinforced, sniffer dogs and modern screening machines.
In January, Tuesday 16th around 3 pm, in an attack the police inspector-general Joseph Boinet termed as “well-coordinated”, four armed gunmen as seen in a CCTV footage circulating online, stormed the entrance of the Dusit hotel and office complex, shooting at anyone within site including the guards manning the entrance.
One of the terrorists blew himself at a garden restaurant in the hotel, popularly known as the secret garden, killing all the occupants.
