Calls made for the arrest of Johnstone Muthama on grounds of incitement

Jubilee leaders have called for the arrest of Senator Johnstone Muthama for the utterances he made during the Cord rally held at Uhuru Park on Wednesday, which they say were inciteful and uncouth.

The over 30 legislators who spoke on two separate press conferences at Parliament yesterday afternoon; one led by TNA Chairman Johnson Sakaja and another by Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki said that Muthama used “foul language” and made inciteful statements during the rally. They also accused him of insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta and Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru with uncouth, uncalled for and demeaning words and called on Inspector-General of Police Joseph Boinnet to arrest him.

Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja warned that if the police and the Director of Public Prosecution fail to take action against Muthama, they would institute his citizen arrest and prosecution.

Nominated Senators Beth Mugo, Naisula Lesuuda and Martha Wangare, joined by their colleagues from the National Assembly Rachel Nyamai (Kitui South), Alice Ng’ang’a (Thika Town) and Naomi Shaaban (Taveta MP), also expressed their disgrace at the language used by Muthama and argued that it was not just disgraceful to Waiguru but to all women at large.

“I am embarrassed by the uncouth language used by Muthama. I am even ashamed to sit with him in the same House. He should respect the women of Kenya and apologise to the President, First Lady and the women of this country,” said Ms Mugo.

NKAISSERY ASKS MUTHAMA TO RECORD STATEMENT

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said Muthama’s utterances undermine the authority of a public officer and were also likely to stir up ethnic hatred against the president. He ordered Muthama to record a statement at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) over the matter and also asked the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to investigate the issue.

“Given the implications of these statements for fracturing the society, I expect the National Cohesion and Integration Commission as a matter of urgency, commence investigation on each of these and any other claims and allegations made that impact negatively on the efforts to enhance national cohesion and integration of Kenyan people,” he said.

“It is therefore imperative that investigations into the speech and its intent begin in earnest. Senator Muthama should immediately record a statement at the Criminal Investigation Department,” he said.
