IEBC says it did not verify all ‘Okoa Kenya’ signatures

The Independent Electoral Boundaried Commission (IEBC) has introduced a new twist in CORD’S Okoa Kenya initiative after the body declared that it did not verify the authenticity of signatures presented by CORD just days after ruling out that the Okoa Kenya referendum drive fell short of the requisite 1 million signatures.

According to a statement by the commission, Okoa Kenya initiative was rejected on the basis of records that did not tally with the voters register.

“The commission did not reject a single signature because of its structure or formation. The commission did not at any point verify the authenticity of the signatures. Some of the records had signatures but without ID or Passport numbers,” said IEBC Communication Manager Tabitha Mutemi in a statement on Monday.

Cord has been on record questioning how IEBC verified the signatures following the commission’s ruling on Wednesday last week that only 891,598 signatures out of the 1.6 million submitted by Cord had been found to be authentic.

The opposition says that following the irregularities demonstrated by IEBC in the okoa kenya initiative, it cannot be trusted to conduct the 2017 general elections and is calling for its disbandment.
