Kenyans have taken to Social Media to condemn parliament for taking their time to vet former Kenya power boss Ben Chumo as a suitable candidate for the chairperson position at the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).
Chumo is among 17 senior Kenya power managers including the current MD Ken Tarus, who were arrested last week and charged with corruption charges, which include; economic crimes and abuse of office.
The Former Kenya Power MD Ben Chumo told MPs during his vetting that he is worth about Sh212 million.
Chumo is among 12 candidates who had been shortlisted for SRC chairmanship before he was nominated by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The SRC chairperson position fell vacant after Sarah Serem tenure came to an end in December 2017.
Kenyans took to social media to condemn Chumo’s vetting for public office, at a time when he has a corruption case pending in court.
Below are some of the views shared on Twitter.
Joshua K. Njenga: Our views on Ben Chumo will not change anything. If he promises MPs he’ll not oppose their requests for pay in increases, he’ll become SRC chairman. It’s a jungle out here.
Donald B Kipkorir: That Ben Chumo facing a multi-million (billion) corruption case is being interviewed by Parliament to be the Chair of Salaries Review Commission (SRC) is taking absurdity to a new level. Our MPs would have set a new moral bar (if they still had a bar) by openly dismissing him.
Oliver Mathenge: The ongoing vetting of Ben Chumo is an indication that we are not serious about the war on corruption. President Kenyatta should have withdrawn his nomination of Chumo once he was arraigned in court last week.
Edward Kisiang’ani: Dr Ben Chumo has no conscience at all. Given he is facing corruption charges in court, he shud never have appeared today before the House vetting Committee for SRC chairmanship. He does not respect chapter 6 of our constitution!
Kennedy Odhiambo: Former Kenya Power MD Ben Chumo is yet to be vetted by Parliament for SRC chairmanship today….. How does this even proceed yet the guy is being investigated…..President Uhuru Kenyatta, is the fight against graft really on??!!
