Alfred Keter case highlights the impunity of politicians in Kenya

Impunity from political leaders in Kenya seems to be getting to new heights by day. Even before the dust could settle on the ‘private developer’ saga, in which a prominent politician in the jubilee government is linked to Weston Hotel, which has been involved in grabbing the playground belonging to Langata Primary School, Nandi Hills MP Alfred Keter has been caught on record exercising his political muscles literally to have a truck carrying merchandise belonging to URP nominated MP Sunjeev Kaur Birdi, to be forcefully released from a weighing bridge in Gilgil.

As seen in the clip, which appears to be have been recorded in a smart phone, a very furious Keter, who is in the company of Sonia as the nominated MP is popularly known is seen confronting personnel at the weighbridge in the most arrogant and foul language.

“….You know my worry, let me tell you the truth, we are the government, state house controller, that is the president’s communicator, amewapigia simu no one has picked,”

“We are the ones who legislate, we make laws for this country. We will reverse the law but we have to suck these people first,”

One of the employees can be heard telling Keter and Sonia that the truck was detained for lack of proper permits and their work is to follow the law before Keter interrupts him by citing a list of powerful people who called to have the matter fixed.

“Who are you waiting to hear from, God or Jesus Christ? This is the honorable Keter, I fight big wars I don’t fight small wars, tell your brother this is not France, this is Kenya, he will lose that contact,”.

CONFRONTING CORRUPTION?

Despite the evidence of the clip, Keter has publicly defended his actions and argued that he was confronting corruption, alleging that police officers at the Gilgil weighbridge were asking for bribes of between Sh10,000 and Sh50,000.

“We cannot handle corruption issues while smiling. We were emotional because we saw Kenyans that had been waiting at a weighbridge that has been turned into a corruption center. There is a lot of money circulating there through corruption.” Keter told journalists.

What is even more disturbing is the long list of senior officials in the government who Keter, mentions that they had made calls to address the issue.

As expected, the video went viral and the issue under the hashtag PrinceOfImpunity and Keter since yesterday with Kenyans calling for the MP to be dealt with as former deputy chief justice, Nancy Baraza was dealt with.

PRESIDENT UHURU BACKS LEGAL ACTION AGAINST KETER

The police, Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Keriako Tobiko and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers have launched investigations into the saga and President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that he supports legal action to be taken against Keter.

“The President fully supports appropriate legal action. The law will take its course. In appearing to intimidate the public officers, Mr Keter makes a number of claims about other public and State officers at State House Nairobi. These claims are untrue, and amount to nothing more than name-dropping,” Uhuru said.
